Reflection on Wrexham Elite Marathon DNF and next steps

The Wrexham Elite Marathon was a race I had been targeting all winter and was a keenly anticipated race for a lot of runners as we come out of lockdown. It's a chance to see if people's training had paid off. I felt that I was in good shape. The training and build up had gone well. I had done lots of marathon pace runs, some long 22 mile runs and had practiced with my nutrition strategy. I was aiming to run a solid 2.20 and bank a new PB. So it was a bit puzzling to me when I dropped off the pace around 17 miles and dropped out of the race by 20 miles due to my pace dramatically slowing and essentially hitting the wall. It has been positive that bigger races have opened up again, but frustrating as I was in decent shape before picking up an injury. Firstly, I had plantar Fascia problem for the whole of June. Luckily, I am able to get excellent Physio through the RAF, so we soon cleared this issue. However, since receiving my 2nd vaccine I have been struggling with Achilles Tendinitis. I don't know whether this came on as a side effect from the vaccine or if it was just a coincidence. I have heard of other runners with similar calf issues as well as higher heart rates and fatigue while running, perhaps another side effect of the vaccine. These symptoms may not be

Old school vs Modern tech runner. Which are you?

Hot or cold, wet or dry, are you the type of runner that just throws on an old pair of running shorts and top, before heading out the door with no fuss? Your shoes may be worn down and you're developing a few holes in your shorts, but that doesn't bother you, just get the run done. No need for water bottles or nutrition (that's for the weak!), as I'd rather suffer. or, Do you stand there in your expensive clothing, compression socks, and Gore-Tex jacket, while waiting for your GPS to confirm a signal? Do you fiddle with your phone or iPod to get your playlist set up or maybe check which Strava segments you will target. For longer runs you may be carrying a few gels or even a water bottle or backpack. Actually, today you may take your credit card and buy yourself a treat half way round. There is no right or wrong way to go for a run. There are pros and cons to each strategy and you will still get the training effect either way. However, different tactics may help some
